EIDERS
The Eider is a sea duck and is rarely found inland, also they are the fastest and heaviest of the UK ducks! Eiderdown which is a well known phrase in British homes has its origins from these ducks. The down from the female duck is used as lining on the their nests, this was collected and used as filling in pillows and quilts. The down is not used as much these days in the pillows and quilts as alternatives are often used.

The images will change every five seconds automatically as a slideshow (the first image may not upload straight away).

Eiders breed on the Northumberland coast northwards, and also on the West coast of Scotland. This collection of photographs were taken at Seahouses in Northumberland.
